Surgical FAQs

Preparing your pet for surgery can be stressful. We've compiled these frequently asked questions to help you feel informed and confident throughout the process.
Will I speak to the surgeon directly?
Generally Dr. Stewart will call immediately following any surgical procedure as your pet is moved into anesthetic recovery. She will discuss the surgery and expected recovery at that time.

Phone consultations prior to surgery can be scheduled for complex cases through your family veterinarian.
How do day-of logistics work?
Surgery takes place at your familiar family vet clinic. Our mobile surgical team arrives with specialized equipment and coordinates with your veterinarian and staff who will administer and monitor anesthesia. Following surgery we will call you with an update and coordinate post-op care instructions directly with your primary veterinarian.
What should I expect during recovery?
Most pets will be groggy initially. Recovery involves strict activity restriction (leash walks only), monitoring the incision site for redness, and ensuring your pet takes all prescribed medications as directed.

Typically pets will be required to have restricted activity for 10-14 days after soft tissue surgery and 6-12 weeks after orthopedic (bone and joint) procedures.
When should I call my vet?
Contact your vet immediately if you notice excessive swelling, bleeding from the incision, incision opening up, persistent vomiting or inappetence or extreme lethargy.

For orthopedic procedures there should be gradual, consistent improvement in use of the operated limb, if your pet is not improving or if they stop using the limb after a period of using it well please contact your veterinarian as they may need to be evaluated.
